This month we celebrate - in addition to the coming parish luau! - the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary comes to us on August 15th.
The Assumption holds a special place in our understanding of Mary. We know that in preparation of her role as the Mother of God - even before she offered her fiat, her 'yes' to the Lord - she was preserved from Original Sin. In order to carry the sinless Lamb of God, it was only fitting that His Mother would also be sinless.
It makes sense, then, that being sinless, Mary would also be preserved from the effects of sin - namely the corruption of our bodies. And so at the end of her life, she was taken up bodily into heaven, rather than her body remaining on earth until the last days.
Mary's Assumption affirms the great dignity of Her role in our celebration and also prefigures what is to come for us all - the resurrection of the body and are happy union with Christ and His Saints in heaven.
