One of my introductions to studies for priesthood was a quote attributed to St. John Chrysostom - a saint nicknamed 'Golden Mouth' for his great preaching. He apparently said that "the road to hell is paved with the skulls of erring priests, with bishops as their signposts. "
Why this quote? At least in part, it is because of the direct-ness of Chrysostom. I can just imagine him looking out with a 'don't mess this up 'expression on his face. Sometimes, I need to hear that!
The blunt seriousness of his statement also emphasizes that what we are about is not some meaningless make- work in the saving movement of God. Instead, our ministry is quite significant - and the results, for better or worse, will play a role in our salvation and the salvation of others.
Though Chrysostom's words speak most directly to clergy, they echo the seriousness of Christ's admonition in today's Gospel:
If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
What we are about is serious business! We need to be 'all in', and committed to the salvation of souls and praise of God. May we ask the Lord to help us undertake this task well and with enthusiasm, so that the fruits of his grace may be evident in our lives and in those of all we meet.
