An odd phrase to use, you say? Maybe so, yet Lent - though penitential - is not necessarily only a time of sorrow and sadness. These are present, and even encouraged, as we reflect on our sins, on our participation in Christ's sufferings, and on the sacrifice He made.
In addition to our own contrition, there is an underlying joy. How often has someone thanked us for something we've done, something that took effort and even cost us something, and we've responded with the phrase 'I'm happy to do it'?
In those cases we are happy to make the sacrifice, to serve a family member or a visiting friend. Yes, we had to do some work, but it was worth it. Not only that, but there is also a sense of joy in knowing that the gift is well received and appreciated.
How much more with our Heavenly Father, who has sent His son to be our guest. We prepare to celebrate Him – life, death and resurrection – in the coming Easter season. In the process we are making sacrifices, preparing space in our lives through the work of abstinence and fasting.
Are we happy to make this sacrifice? Maybe not always, but working towards that hopefully! It is helpful to be reminded that our Guest, the Lord, is grateful for your efforts. Every small gesture, each act of penance, consoles the heart of Jesus and demonstrates to Him that we care for Him. One day we will see Him face-to-face, and receive His gratitude for all we have done. May we respond sincerely 'I was happy to do it'!
